What can you do?

Understand your risk.

Knowing your risk is the first step in preparedness. Stay informed about the storm’s progress through reliable sources like the National Weather Service and local news outlets.

Develop an emergency plan.

Create a plan that includes how you will communicate with family and friends, where you will go if you need to evacuate and what supplies you’ll need. Campus Safety offers tips on how to make a personal emergency plan.

Gather supplies.

Stock up on essential supplies such as water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries and a first-aid kit. Don’t forget to include items for your pets. Campus Safety offers tips on how to make an emergency supply kit.

Secure your property.

Take steps to protect your home. Secure outdoor furniture and ensure all windows and doors are properly sealed. If you live in a flood-prone area, consider using sandbags to prevent water from entering your home.

Stay informed.

Keep multiple ways of receiving weather alerts, such as a weather radio, smartphone apps, and local news. Be aware of hazards.

Flooding and power outages are potential hazards during inclement weather. Do not walk, swim, or drive through flood waters. Turn around. Don’t drown!
